The checkout upsells feature got a complete rebuild, and it's a lot more useful now.
Here's the idea: right after a new customer finishes signing up, while they still have an open order, they land on the thank you page and see a little carousel of add-on products you picked, each with an optional bonus discount and a short countdown. It's that "want fries with that?" moment, right when they're already in buying mode. Anything they add drops straight into their first order.
You set it all up on one page under Products → Checkout Upsells. Turn it on, set how long the bonus window runs after signup, write your own headline, then search your products and click to feature the ones you want. Each featured product can carry its own bonus discount, or none at all, up to you.

A few things about how these bonus items behave in the cart. They're their own one-off line, so the customer can't change the quantity on it, and it wears a "Checkout Bonus" badge so everyone knows where it came from. If that same customer later shops for more of that product the normal way, it adds as a separate line instead of merging in, so the discounted price stays put on the bonus and the regular price applies to the rest.
The bonus discount only applies during that signup window. After it's up, the product is still there to add, just at the regular price.
If you were on the old checkout upsells (the one tied to a store category), this replaces it completely. Head to Products → Checkout Upsells to set it up fresh.
